Considering Adoption?

If you are considering adoption, you’re already aware of the significant costs that can be involved—anywhere from $0 to $50,000 per child. With this in mind, the university is increasing the amount provided under the Adoption Assistance Plan.

To participate in the Adoption Assistance Plan, you must be a full-time faculty or staff member with at least two consecutive years of full-time JHU service immediately prior to the initiation of the adoption process. In addition, you must remain employed through the date of adoption.

Children covered by the plan include any child under age 12 at the time the adoption process is initiated. Adoptions of stepchildren or children of domestic partners are not eligible if the natural, custodial parent is living.

The plan now covers documented, eligible expenses for a single child adoption up to a maximum of $5,000 per family. For multiple adoptions at a single time, the maximum reimbursement will be $10,000 per family for all eligible expenses.

Eligible expenses generally include agency fees, legal and court fees, medical and hospital services, transportation and temporary foster care.

Visit the Benefits website for details and associated application forms.
