Health Care Reform Update

Health Care Reform (HCR) is expected to have minimal impact on JHU in 2014. One new provision to note is the individual mandate. This dictates that, effective January 1, 2014, nearly everyone must have health care coverage or pay a penalty when they file for 2014 income taxes. The individual mandate will have minimal impact on benefits-eligible employees due to our waive coverage policy. As in the past, eligible employees are defaulted to individual EHP coverage if they fail to give proof of other coverage.

Also new this year due to HCR, the public Health Insurance Marketplace will open in October. Everyone should visit the Marketplace to compare their available options, both through JHU and the public Marketplace. For full-time employees, JHU will likely be the most cost-effective choice.
