MARYLAND PREPAID COLLEGE TRUSTThe Maryland Prepaid College Trust was created by Governor Parris N. Glendening and the Maryland General Assembly to provide parents, grandparents, and others with an affordable way to prepay for a child's future college education. Benefits of the program can be used at any of Maryland's 2 & 4-year public colleges and universities as well as towards tuition and mandatory fees at public and private colleges or universities throughout the Unites States. The prepaid program offers a variety of tuition plans, payment options, and significant tax benefits, including a new Maryland State income tax deduction. For Maryland residents, there are no state income taxes on the earnings when the child goes to college and the contract owner can deduct up to $2,500 per contract per year when they contribute to the program. The program is open to all children in the ninth grade or younger. Either the child or the purchaser must be a resident of Maryland when the contract is purchased. The next enrollment period is October 15, 2001 through February 28, 2002. To receive an Application Booklet, call toll-free at 1-888-4MD-GRAD (1-888-463-4723).
