Health Care Reform Update

Health Care Reform (HCR) is expected to have minimal impact on JHU in 2014. One new provision to note is the individual mandate. This dictates that, effective January 1, 2014, nearly everyone must have health care coverage or pay a penalty when they file for 2014 income taxes. The individual mandate will have minimal impact on benefits-eligible employees due to our waive coverage policy. One Hopkins Night at Camden Yards

The Office of Work, Life and Engagement has partnered with the Baltimore Orioles to offer Johns Hopkins affiliates an exclusive discount to watch the Orioles fight for a 2013 wild-card spot when they play the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, September 26 at 7:05 p.m. during One Hopkins Night at Camden Yards.
Ticket prices for this special event are:
Left Field Lower Box Sections 66-86: $20 (reg. $30)
Upper Reserve Sections 306-364, rows 13-25: $ 8 (reg. $17)

The first 10,000 fans, age 15 and older, will receive a fan designed t-shirt from the Orioles. Tickets are available for online purchase only and there is an additional 10% service charge per ticket.

October is National Work and Family Month: Join the Celebration

The Office of Work, Life and Engagement has the following events planned to celebrate National Work and Family Month.
    • 10/08/2013: Work & Family Fair, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    • All employees are invited to attend the 2013 Johns Hopkins Work and Family Fair in the Turner Concourse on the East Baltimore Campus. (The Johns Hopkins Shuttle makes frequent runs between Johns Hopkins campuses. For more information on shuttle schedules, visit http://www.parking.jhu.edu/shuttles_keswick_connector.html.)
    • More than 30 experts will provide information and resources related to work-life effectiveness. Representatives from local agencies and organizations will be available to discuss child care and parenting, aging parents/older adults, finances, legal issues, disability services, and health and wellness.
    • New this year: consider submitting your story of how you, a colleague, or a manager maintains a healthy mix between work and personal life at http://hopkinsworklife.org/work-family-fair. Stories will be shared at the fair and possibly on our website. More...

Staff, Faculty, and Students Provide 1,000 School Uniforms to Support Baltimore City Students

Baltimore City Public Schools has turned to Johns Hopkins to support families who cannot afford the required student uniforms. Since 2011, thanks to the generosity of the Johns Hopkins community, we have met the need. During the 2013 Johns Hopkins Adopt-a-Student Uniform Drive, 500 students from 111 Baltimore City Public Schools were sponsored, providing students with two new uniforms each, to allow them to start the 2012-2013 school year prepared and ready to learn. Workplace Mediation Program

The University’s workplace mediation program is designed to provide a voluntary and confidential process to resolve conflict arising in the course of employment, in accordance with the Workplace Mediation Procedures. HR Policies Amended

The amendment to Section 12 of the Personnel Policy item A.1 of the HR Policy Manual referring to holidays has been amended effective July 1, 2013. The definition of Commencement Day is amended to indicate it is observed by departments located on the Homewood Campus, including Housing and those departments located in the Wyman Building.

The amendments to Sections 10 and 11 of the Personnel Policy have been made to vacation use and accrual for staff hired after July 1, 2013 to allow staff to use accrued vacation after successfully completing the introductory period; vacation accrual maximums have been amended to limit at 22 days per year and maximum number of accrued unused vacation leave that can be paid at termination to staff hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2013.
